Federal Judge Dismisses Dali Owners’ Shipbuilder Lawsuit in Key Bridge Case

A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit brought by the owner and manager of the cargo ship Dali against Hyundai Heavy Industries, removing one branch of the continuing legal battle over the 2024 collapse of Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge.

Grace Ocean Private Limited, which owns the ship, and Synergy Marine Private Limited, its manager, filed the case in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. They alleged that Hyundai defectively designed the ship’s switchboard and that a label placed too close to the end of a critical cable detached, opened a circuit breaker and contributed to the loss of electrical power and steering.

The Dali struck the bridge on March 26, 2024, killing six construction workers and severing a major transportation route into and around Baltimore. A National Transportation Safety Board report cited by CBS News Baltimore said the ship experienced four blackouts within roughly 12 hours before the collision.

The dismissal does not erase the broader litigation, investigations or financial disputes connected to the disaster. It addresses the owners’ and manager’s specific attempt to shift responsibility toward the shipbuilder through this lawsuit.

For Baltimore, the ruling is another significant legal development in a case whose consequences remain physical, economic and deeply personal. Reconstruction, accountability and compensation continue on separate tracks, and each court decision helps define which parties may ultimately bear responsibility.
