JAY-Z’s London Opener Brings Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean and Giggs to Tottenham

JAY-Z’s return to a London stage did not play like a quiet victory lap. The first night of his JAY-Z30 run at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium expanded into a celebration of hip-hop history, Caribbean influence and the city around him, with Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean, Giggs, DJ Khaled and Idris Elba joining the evening in surprise roles.

The biggest moment reunited Hill and Jean for a compact Fugees appearance built around “Ready or Not.” Their arrival connected JAY-Z’s 30-year anniversary run to another defining catalog from the same era, turning a stadium-sized solo show into a wider salute to records that reshaped rap and R&B in the 1990s.

London had its own representation. Giggs stepped out after JAY-Z acknowledged the South London rapper’s name-check in “God Did,” giving the crowd a local voice inside a global production. Elba opened the show, while Khaled appeared as the night moved through guest-heavy sections and JAY-Z’s deep catalog.

JAY-Z also paused to recognize Beyoncé’s birthday and performed “Young Forever” in her honor. The personal moment fit a set built to move between blockbuster records and the relationships surrounding them, rather than simply checking off a greatest-hits list.

The performance marked JAY-Z’s first solo U.K. headline date in more than a decade and the first of two Tottenham nights. A second London show was scheduled for September 5, followed by Paris on September 10 and two Los Angeles dates in October. The limited run is framed around three decades of his career and the 25th anniversary of “The Blueprint.”
