Giants Release Najee Harris, According to Reports

The Giants are moving on from Najee Harris after a brief stay in New York. UPI reported on October 20th, citing a league source, that the team released the veteran running back following five appearances this season.
The reported move leaves another question for a backfield that has been sharing work among several players. It also closes a short chapter for Harris, who joined the Giants in August after an injury-shortened season with the Los Angeles Chargers.
Limited work in a crowded backfield
UPI’s report credits Harris with 99 yards on 31 rushing attempts for New York. He played 11 offensive snaps in Sunday’s 34–27 loss to New Orleans, fewer than fellow backs Devin Singletary and Tyrone Tracy Jr. Cam Skattebo also remained part of the group.
The same report places the Giants at 3–2–1 ahead of their visit to Houston on Sunday, October 25th, at 1 p.m. Eastern. Removing one back from the group does not, by itself, establish how the remaining carries will be divided.
How Harris arrived in New York
The Giants’ August signing announcement described a veteran with four consecutive 1,000-yard rushing seasons in Pittsburgh. Harris was the Steelers’ first-round selection in 2021 and earned a Pro Bowl selection as a rookie.
He moved to the Chargers in 2025, but a torn Achilles ended that season in Week 3. New York then offered a return opportunity under John Harbaugh, who had faced him repeatedly while coaching Baltimore.
What remains unresolved
The release reporting establishes the immediate development; it does not confirm Harris’ next team or a new starting arrangement for New York. Those decisions should be treated separately as further announcements arrive.
For the wider league picture surrounding this roster move, PowerPage’s NFL Week 6 roundup covers Sunday’s early results. The Giants now turn toward Houston with a smaller running-back group and another opportunity to define its roles.
