David Jonsson Will Lead the Next Generation of Black Panther

Marvel Studios is preparing a new generation to inherit the Black Panther legacy.

British actor David Jonsson will portray an adult Prince T’Challa II—also known as Toussaint—in Black Panther 3. Director Ryan Coogler introduced Jonsson during Marvel’s presentation at San Diego Comic-Con.

The character is the son of the late King T’Challa and Nakia. A younger version was introduced at the conclusion of 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, revealing that Nakia had been raising him away from Wakanda.

Jonsson will appear alongside returning cast members Letitia Wright and Winston Duke. Denzel Washington is also expected to join the film in a role Coogler developed specifically for him.

The third installment is scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 15, 2028, with Coogler returning as director. The production is expected to be photographed on 70mm film.

Jonsson has built his profile through projects including Industry, Alien: Romulus and The Long Walk. His casting gives Marvel an opportunity to continue T’Challa’s family story without attempting to recreate Chadwick Boseman’s performance.

The development also suggests that Shuri’s leadership and Prince T’Challa II’s coming-of-age journey may operate together instead of forcing the franchise to erase one generation for another.

Coogler’s first two Black Panther films became major cultural and commercial events. The third film now carries the responsibility of protecting that legacy while creating a believable future for Wakanda.
