Dallas is getting a major piece of its offensive line back for Thursday Night Football. The Cowboys activated All-Pro left guard Tyler Smith from injured reserve ahead of their October 8th meeting with Tampa Bay, while the Buccaneers enter the game without starting quarterback Baker Mayfield.

The matchup begins at 8:15 p.m. Eastern at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, with national streaming coverage on Prime Video. Dallas enters 2–2; Tampa Bay is still looking for its first victory.

Smith’s return changes the Dallas front

The Cowboys’ activation announcement confirmed that Smith will suit up after missing the first four games. A thumb injury suffered in training camp required surgery, and Dallas opened his practice window on Monday before completing the roster move Thursday.

That gives Dak Prescott an experienced protector and strengthens the blocking group in front of running back Javonte Williams. Dallas waived Emari Demercado in the corresponding move. Smith’s return is the concrete personnel development to watch, rather than simply a possibility carried over from earlier in the week.

Dallas is coming off a comeback win against Houston. The Cowboys’ broadcast preview highlighted CeeDee Lamb’s production and Williams’ three rushing touchdowns in that game. Carrying that offense into a short week is the next challenge, with a winning record available if Dallas takes care of business at home.

Tampa Bay turns to Daniels again

The Buccaneers’ Thursday roster update said rookie Jalon Daniels is set for another start in Mayfield’s absence. Mayfield injured his right thumb against Minnesota, and Tampa Bay elevated Easton Stick from the practice squad to provide the backup option.

Tampa Bay also elevated safety J.J. Roberts, adding depth with Antoine Winfield Jr. unavailable because of a rib fracture. Those absences put additional responsibility on the players stepping into the lineup against Dallas’ passing attack.

Tonight’s game pairs a Dallas team trying to build on its recovery with a Tampa Bay team trying to stop its slide. The clearest questions are how quickly Smith settles back in and whether Daniels can sustain enough offense to keep the Buccaneers competitive.
