Commanders’ Offensive Line Gets Allegretti Back With Philadelphia Looming

The Commanders’ offensive line is getting something it lacked through much of August: a chance to work together. Nick Allegretti has returned to practice after a calf strain, and Sam Cosmi is back following an illness. Washington’s September 2 update presents a group trying to build continuity before opening against Philadelphia, not one declaring its protection problems solved.

Laremy Tunsil’s absence remains the starting point. With the left tackle on injured reserve, Brandon Coleman has shifted back outside. That adjustment changes the choices at guard, while Allegretti’s return gives Washington its intended center after weeks of moving other linemen through the position.

During that stretch, Julian Good-Jones handled substantial work with Jayden Daniels, and rookie Matt Gulbin received a closer look. The club’s September 1 press-conference recap explained why Gulbin made the active roster and Good-Jones returned on the practice squad: coaches valued the rookie’s development and the veteran’s accumulated work with the quarterback.

Those alternatives do not erase the value of a settled starting group. Center is a communication job as much as a blocking assignment. A returning veteran must reconnect with the quarterback and the players beside him while the offense prepares for an opponent capable of stressing those connections immediately.

Philadelphia brings Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis to the interior matchup. Washington’s coaches have expressed confidence in Allegretti’s experience, while the linemen have emphasized that preseason combinations did not consistently represent the full group. That is useful context, but it is not a substitute for proving the protection can hold up.

Daniels’ command of the offense gives the line a partner in that process. Dan Quinn described a quarterback who had taken more than 500 training-camp snaps and was handling the new system decisively. The task now is making the protection and the quarterback’s timing operate as one unit.

The earlier roster moves established Washington’s available personnel. This week is about turning those names into a dependable front. Getting Allegretti back is a meaningful step; the Eagles will provide the first regular-season measure of how far it carries.
