Commanders Add Boogie Basham and Two Safeties in a Six-Player Roster Shuffle

Commanders add Boogie Basham to a defense that needed another experienced edge option before the preseason finale. Washington signed the outside linebacker Tuesday along with safeties Joshuah Bledsoe and Quindell Johnson, turning one transaction announcement into a meaningful late-summer roster reset.

The corresponding moves were just as revealing. Washington released safeties Will Harris and Malik Spencer and placed defensive end Drake Jackson on Reserve/Injured. Harris had been part of the veteran competition in the secondary, while Jackson's move creates a clearer need for someone who can absorb snaps on the outside.

Basham enters with the strongest NFL résumé of the three additions. Buffalo selected him in the second round of the 2021 draft, and he has appeared in 43 regular-season games. He spent two seasons with the Giants, recording 20 tackles and a pass deflection, then played three games for Carolina last season and made four tackles.

The move is not a promise of a major role. It is a practical evaluation before Washington settles its regular-season depth chart. Basham must learn the terminology quickly, show that he can set the edge against the run and prove useful on special teams. His experience gives the coaching staff a more developed option than a typical final-week signing.

Bledsoe and Johnson add similar competition at safety. Both arrive at a position that lost two players in the same announcement, so practice repetitions should be available immediately. Their challenge is to demonstrate assignment discipline and coverage range while establishing enough special-teams value to justify a place on the 53-man roster or practice squad.

Washington closes the preseason Friday night in Baltimore after Wednesday's joint practice with the Ravens. That gives all three newcomers only a narrow runway, but late roster moves can become important when injuries reshape a position group.
