Washington’s Monday-night comeback ran out of chances. The Commanders lost 23–17 to the San Francisco 49ers on October 19th, recovering from a 20-point deficit before their final possession ended with Jayden Daniels being sacked.

This Commanders 49ers recap starts with two very different halves: San Francisco controlled the opening 30 minutes, while Washington’s offense and defense finally found enough rhythm to make the finish competitive. The result also sent the Commanders into their bye week with concern about receiver Terry McLaurin’s knee injury.

The early deficit proved too large

According to Washington’s official takeaways, the 49ers led 20–3 at halftime and outgained the Commanders 303–90 before the break. Washington had only two first downs in that span. A San Francisco field goal after halftime stretched the margin to 23–3.

Daniels then led a touchdown drive finished by a one-yard pass to Stefon Diggs. A subsequent possession produced a nine-yard scoring pass to Rachaad White. Washington’s defense supplied repeated stops, giving the offense opportunities to turn the rally into something more.

Two late chances, no winning score

The team’s game account describes a fourth-and-3 attempt from the San Francisco 17-yard line on which Treylon Burks could not retain a pass near the goal line as he hit the ground. Washington forced another stop, but its last opportunity ended on the sack.

The official statistics credit Daniels with 29 completions on 40 attempts for 300 yards and two touchdowns. Burks finished with four receptions for 66 yards. Those numbers explain the late offensive threat, but the comeback still needed one more successful possession.

McLaurin’s season is over

Quinn confirmed Tuesday that McLaurin’s season is over because of a torn left patellar tendon, according to the Associated Press. McLaurin was carted off during the first half of Monday’s game.

The bye gives Washington time to assess its injuries and address the uneven performance. Its next stretch begins with consecutive home games, starting against Philadelphia. For the broader weekend picture, see PowerPage’s NFL Week 6 early-game roundup.
