Chance the Rapper is reconsidering what his name asks of him. In a Tea Time conversation with Raven-Symoné and Miranda Maday, published October 1st, the Chicago artist says he has been thinking about dropping “Chance” and performing as “The Rapper.” He presents it as an idea under consideration, not a completed rebrand.

The distinction matters because his explanation is about his relationship with the craft. Chance recalls receiving his stage name from a girl in high school. As his career expanded, he says people encouraged him to move beyond the rapper label. He wanted the opposite: to keep his achievements connected to hip-hop.

“I want to carry rap the same way that rap has carried me through life,” he says. That commitment anchors the discussion. His affection for language, writing and performance remains central even as he questions how much of his personal experience needs to become material for an audience.

Chance describes earlier songs that drew directly from family experiences, including his grandmother’s surgery and becoming a father. He still values vulnerability in rap. But he also wants room for political critique, imagined futures and wordplay—forms of expression that do not require turning each day of his private life into a song.

That makes the possible name change a useful starting point for a larger conversation about artistic boundaries. Listeners can feel close to a musician through intimate records, while the musician may eventually want more distance between the work and the household. A shift in subject matter does not necessarily signal a retreat from the genre.

Watch the interview here; the name discussion begins around 20:41. For now, the news is the creative question Chance is exploring. Keep up with more artist conversations through PowerPage’s Hip-Hop News coverage.
