Chance the Rapper’s Coloring Book Anniversary Tour Is Coming to Baltimore

One of the projects that helped change the music industry’s relationship with streaming is coming back to the stage—and Baltimore is part of the celebration.

Chance the Rapper will bring the Coloring Book 10th Anniversary Tour to Nevermore Hall on Tuesday, August 25. The concert begins at 8 p.m., with La Reezy listed as the supporting performer on the official Live Nation event page.

The Baltimore performance arrives two weeks after the anniversary tour’s August 11 opening date in Cleveland. The itinerary also includes stops in New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Atlanta, New Orleans, Dallas and other major markets.

Released in May 2016, Coloring Book combined gospel arrangements, Chicago rap, soul and mainstream collaborations without surrendering Chance’s independent identity.

The project also became a pivotal moment in the streaming era. According to the Recording Academy, it became the first streaming-exclusive release to chart on the Billboard 200, where it peaked at No. 8.

At the 2017 Grammy Awards, Coloring Book became the first streaming-only project to win Best Rap Album.

Chance also collected Best Rap Performance for “No Problem” and Best New Artist that evening.

Those achievements helped demonstrate that a major commercial and awards breakthrough no longer required a conventional physical release or traditional label rollout.

Streaming was already reshaping listening habits, but Coloring Book forced the wider industry to recognize that change in its chart and awards systems.

Musically, the mixtape was built for a communal setting. Choirs, horns, layered vocals and gospel-inspired arrangements gave records such as “Blessings,” “No Problem” and “Finish Line/Drown” a live energy that extended beyond headphones.

That makes an anniversary tour particularly appropriate. Instead of presenting the mixtape only as a streaming milestone, the concerts can bring its large-scale arrangements back into rooms filled with the listeners who helped make the project successful.

For Baltimore, the August 25 stop adds another nationally recognized hip-hop date to the city’s late-summer calendar. Nevermore Hall provides a more intimate environment than an arena, giving the performance the potential to feel closer to the celebratory, community-centered spirit of the original project.

A decade later, Coloring Book represents both a specific moment in Chance the Rapper’s career and a turning point for the business surrounding hip-hop.

The mixtape helped open the door for artists who wanted to reach a national audience without following every part of the traditional label model. Its Baltimore anniversary date will celebrate the music—and the independent path that helped carry it into history.
