Brandy is helping reopen the doors to Hillman College. Netflix released a first listen Tuesday to her new version of the A Different World opening theme for the sequel series premiering September 24.
The assignment connects two important pieces of Black television history. Before Brandy became the center of Moesha, A Different World showed college life through a fictional HBCU and built a lasting audience with stories about identity, friendship, responsibility and community.
Brandy’s rendition keeps the familiar lyrics while changing the sound around them. Netflix’s studio preview shows her recording the track and reflecting on the original series’ influence on her as a young viewer. She is following several earlier interpretations, including the best-known version performed by Aretha Franklin.
Original cast member Dawnn Lewis co-wrote the theme and is scheduled to return as a guest star in the new series. The sequel follows Deborah Wayne, the daughter of Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, as she begins her own first year at Hillman. Maleah Joi Moon leads the cast, with Debbie Allen directing three episodes and Felicia Pride serving as showrunner.
The music choice works because it does not ask Brandy to imitate Franklin. Her value is the recognizable layering and control of her own voice, along with a television legacy that makes her participation feel connected to the culture rather than added for promotion.
For Power1047 listeners, this is both an R&B story and a generational handoff. A song that once welcomed viewers to Hillman now carries a voice associated with the next major era of Black television.
