BMA’s “Flashback” Opens With a Free Day Celebrating Baltimore Photography

The BMA is inviting Baltimore to see its history through the people who photographed it. Flashback: Two Centuries of Baltimore Photography opens October 4th, with free exhibition admission that day and an afternoon Community Day connecting the galleries to family portraits, local artists, and personal archives.

The exhibition brings together more than 200 images spanning 185 years and remains on view through February 21st, 2027. The museum’s exhibition guide traces a path from early photographic processes to contemporary work, including neighborhood documentation and images of major moments in Baltimore’s public life.

Black photographers and the communities they recorded are central to that story. The BMA highlights Arthur Laidler Macbeth’s portrait studio and Irving Henry Phillips Sr.’s photojournalism for the Afro-American newspaper, alongside more recent images by artists including Devin Allen. The show also examines photographers whose contributions were obscured by racial and gender prejudice.

Opening-day visitors can enter Flashback free from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Community Day activities run from 1 to 5 p.m., with hands-on portrait stations, a student-run pop-up photo studio, and gallery conversations. The museum lists talks with Bria Sterling-Wilson, Jim Burger, and Jerrell Gibbs among the afternoon’s offerings.

One especially practical stop is Preserving the Tangible, a 3 to 4:30 p.m. workshop led by Valerie J. Maynard Foundation archivists. It connects the care of an artist’s photographic collection with methods participants can apply to family photographs and community records. That makes the day useful for people who have their own history sitting in albums, envelopes, or boxes.
