Baltimore Plans New School-Zone Speed Cameras on Five Corridors Starting October 26th

Baltimore drivers have advance notice of five school-zone corridors joining the city’s automated speed-enforcement program. The Department of Transportation announced October 9th that implementation is expected to begin on or about Monday, October 26th, including enforcement in multiple directions.
The announced locations are the 5700–6000 blocks of Loch Raven Boulevard near Cardinal Shehan and Yorkwood Elementary; the 4600–5300 blocks of Moravia Road near Furley Elementary; and the 2800–2900 blocks of West Baltimore Street near The SEED School of Maryland.
The remaining corridors are the 6200–6400 blocks of McClean Boulevard near Reginald F. Lewis High School and the 2300–2500 blocks of East Northern Parkway near Baltimore Revolutionary Academy, or BRAVE.
DOT says school-zone cameras operate year-round, Monday through Friday, from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. The system flags vehicles traveling at least 12 mph above the posted limit. Drivers should follow the posted limit, rather than treating the enforcement threshold as permission to speed. The city describes the program’s purpose as reducing speeds and improving school-zone safety.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s school-safety guidance adds a reminder that applies wherever children travel: stay alert when backing out of driveways and moving through neighborhoods, school zones and bus stops. The agency emphasizes looking for children around arrival and dismissal, even when a bus’s warning lights are not flashing.
For families walking to a stop, the agency recommends using sidewalks when available, crossing at intersections or marked crossings, and looking left, right and left again before entering the street. It also reminds pedestrians to watch the road instead of their phones. These precautions matter beyond the hours when a camera is operating.
The October 26th date is a planned rollout, so check the city’s announcement for updates before the start. Review the listed blocks against your regular route and leave enough time for a slower, more attentive trip through school areas.
