“A Different World” Returns September 24 With a New Hillman Class and Familiar Faces

“A Different World” has a September 24 return date, and Netflix’s sequel is building its next chapter around a student with an especially recognizable family name. Maleah Joi Moon plays Deborah Wayne, the daughter of Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, as she begins her first year at Hillman College.

The premise gives the new series a connection to the original without requiring the younger cast to stand in for it. Deborah arrives at the fictional historically Black college with friendships, romance and her own growing pains ahead of her. For viewers, the question is not only who comes back; it is how this new class makes Hillman its own.

Netflix lists 10 half-hour episodes for the season. Kadeem Hardison and Jasmine Guy return as Dwayne and Whitley, while the wider ensemble brings together returning favorites and new students. The new generation includes Alijah Kai, Cornell Young IV, Jordan Aaron Hall, Kennedi Reece and Chibuikem Uche alongside Moon.

There is a connection behind the camera as well. Felicia Pride serves as showrunner and executive producer, and Debbie Allen returns as an executive producer and directs the premiere. Netflix’s cast preview describes relationships that extend across generations, including Ron Johnson and his son Shaquille, played by Darryl M. Bell and Young.

The music is another bridge. Brandy performs a new version of the opening theme, a role Netflix announced in August. Her contribution brings a familiar voice to the beginning of a series designed to introduce unfamiliar faces. It is one of the clearest ways the sequel can acknowledge the original while establishing a new identity.
