The Philadelphia 76ers erased a 29-point deficit to defeat the Cleveland Cavaliers 114–106 in their home opener on Thursday, October 22nd. Tyrese Maxey scored 32 points as Philadelphia turned an error-filled start into a forceful second-half response at Xfinity Mobile Arena.

The Sixers trailed 69–45 at halftime, then outscored Cleveland 69–37 after the break. NBA.com’s game report describes a turnaround driven by the starting lineup, which supplied 64 of Philadelphia’s 69 second-half points. The victory moved the Sixers to 2–0.

A difficult opening gives way to a rally

Philadelphia’s early possessions repeatedly ended without a clean shot. The Sixers committed 11 turnovers in the first 13 minutes, allowing Cleveland to establish control. Donovan Mitchell scored 20 of his 32 points before halftime, and the Cavaliers took a substantial lead into the locker room.

The second half changed the balance. Philadelphia won the third quarter 37–21, then continued applying pressure in the fourth. Joel Embiid’s basket with 6:54 remaining gave the Sixers their first lead, 96–95, turning a long recovery into a chance to finish the job.

Multiple stars carry the finish

Embiid finished with 24 points. Jaylen Brown added 21 points and eight rebounds, while LeBron James contributed 17 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and three steals in his Philadelphia home debut. VJ Edgecombe recorded 11 points, seven rebounds, six assists and three steals.

The contributions mattered beyond the scoring totals. Philadelphia needed to protect possessions, generate stops and finish rebounds while reducing a deficit that had reached 29. Instead of relying on one brief scoring burst, the Sixers sustained their recovery through the final two quarters.

What the comeback means

NBA.com’s daily recap identifies the result as Philadelphia’s largest comeback since play-by-play tracking began in the 1997–98 season. It was also the largest comeback win of James’ career. Those distinctions give the home opener historical significance without making it a measure of what the team will accomplish over a full season.

For Cleveland, Mitchell finished with 32 points and 10 rebounds, and Evan Mobley added 18 points and eight rebounds. The Cavaliers’ early control did not survive a second half in which they scored only 37 points.

Philadelphia has now followed its opening win over New York with a very different kind of victory: a recovery from a deep hole against Cleveland. Follow PowerPage Sports for more NBA and regional sports coverage.
